Description

A 280 Vrms three-phase power supply voltage is rectified and smoothed to feed current to a resistive load. A 4 PTCEL network limits the inrush current charging the capacitor. The power supply is connected to the load only when the capacitor voltage has reached a defined voltage while the PTC network is disconnected at the same time and left for cooling. At the switch on the load, one can see there is a second inrush current peak. As the PTC tolerances can be chosen at will, the temperatures reached by the elements change accordingly . The upper branch (ptc1-ptc2) pumps in this example more current as the global R25 tolerance of this branch is lower than the other arm. In this branch (ptc1 -25% and ptc2 - 10%), it is the highest tolerance element ptc2 which reaches the highest temperature though. In this live tunable design, the user can adjust the smoothing capacitor (smooth_cap) to higher value and see the result on the temperatures reached by each PTC. Ambient temperature (for ptc1 to 4) can also be changed within the 0-50°C temperature range. One can evaluate the effect of short circuit of the smoothing capa , by adapting parallel resistance rshort to 0, in order to see how fast the PTC network switches under these circumstances.

As a last simulation, you could bring back rshort to 100Meg , put the value of smooth_cap to 6 m but this time select a much longer simulation time (100s) and look out for yourself what happens to the circuit long after the PTC's have switched. Your patience will be rewarded......
